More Tour Dates Here!
Our annual European vacation goes inside! While we are getting ready to head out in North America, we're also thinking ahead (for once!) and want to give you a taste of what else we have in store for you next year. It's been over five years since we've played in arenas in Europe and we can't wait to visit again, so with that said, we have a ton of shows planned in 2009. Strap in, hang on, and get ready for the nuttiness to begin as we roll them out for you a few at a time over the next ten days or so.
First dates up on the announcement schedule are for our friends in Italy . . . Milan at the Datch Forum on June 22 and in Rome at the Palalottomatica on June 24. Tickets go on sale on www.ticketone.it on October 18 at midnight local time and in stores at 9 AM (also local) that day. Appology
Firstly, I must appologize for my absence the last couple of weeks. I've started a new job and went back to school for the first time since 8 years so it's been taking a lot out of me. That being said I am now working on getting everything back up and running, including the Metallica updates so don't you worry. Just come to the forum and sign up, come and chat. Updates are up to date there!

Even more death on the radio
We'll be back on the airwaves live, and this time you get to ask the questions! On Monday, October 20, Lars and Kirk will be guests on Rockline coming to you from Phoenix, AZ the night before The World Magnetic tour begins. The show starts at 8:30 pm PST. . . check www.rocklineradio.com for a station in your neck of the woods broadcasting the show. And if you want to call in to ask a question or just to say "hey," the toll free number is 1-800-344-ROCK (7625).
What, no station near you? Never fear . . . you can also find a list of stations on the Rockline site that will be streaming the show live by clicking "listen live" when you get there. We'll have a recording of the show streaming here a day or two later if you miss it or just have to hear it again.
Finally, the same show will be rebroadcast as an "Instant Classic" on Wednesday October 22 . . . again, check the Rockline site for a station near you.
Talk to you soon!
Los Angeles Opening acts
As you may have heard, the owners of the Los Angeles Forum have a little issue with our friends from Lamb of God, so unfortunately they will not be joining us for the two shows at the Forum on December 17 and 18. That's the bad news . . . the good news is that our bros in Machine Head are rushing back to the States from Europe to step in on those two nights. And of course no show would be complete without The Sword kicking things off, so they'll be there too.
More viewing pleasure?

We're honored to be among the nine nominees being considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . . . has it really been 25 years since our first record came out? Yeah, that's the criteria to be nominated and we're keeping company this year with Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Run D.M.C., the Stooges, War, and Bobby Womack.
Of course we don't know yet if we're really in . . . the official inductees for this year are not announced until January 2009. So as we always say, keep watching here for more info. The big ceremony will be held April 4, 2009 in Cleveland.

Hetfield: Rob Trujillo has written more for this album than Newsted has in 14 years
A five-minute interview with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield conducted yesterday (Wednesday, July 16) by VG TV at the opening show of the second leg of the band's European summer tour in Bergen, Norway can be viewed below. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.
On the title of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic":
James Hetfield: "'Death Magnetic', at least the title, to me, it's… It had something to do with… It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [ALICE IN CHAINS] and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death… some people are drawn towards it, and just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, [and] other people are afraid of it and push away. And the concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point. So that's kind of the subject matter."
On bassist Robert Trujillo's contributions to the new record and the band's overall sound:
James Hetfield: "I don't really have to say it, but I will — he's an amazing bass player; very competent. He can play pretty much anything we throw at him. Not only that, but obviously [Robert] playing with his fingers brings a fuller sound. He — and no disrespect to Jason [Newsted, Rob's predecessor in METALLICA] — but Rob has already written more on this album than Jason had in his whole 14 years. A lot of that had to do with us not being willing, and I totally understand that, but just his material seemed to gel better. It feels as though we've known him forever, basically, is what it feels like. And there's still times when I see him in pictures with us, and I go, 'Oh, yeah! He's in our band. Dude, we kick ass even more now.' It's a good feeling."

More on Guitar Hero III
Activision's "Guitar Hero World Tour" is one of this year's most eagerly anticipated games, but the company has big news for fans who can't wait for that: Metallica will be releasing its next album, "Death Magnetic," as a "Guitar Hero III" download on the same day that the CD arrives in stores.
"It's exciting, 27 years into your career, to be doing something first," said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. "In five to 10 years it'll be a normal thing to release an album to 'Guitar Hero' the same day as the record."
To make its big announcement, Activision eschewed a booth at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Los Angeles in favor of a reception at a former cathedral. A big chunk of the video games community — namely, the companies that make them and the journalists who write about them — is in Los Angeles this week for the annual gathering where most of us get our first look at games for the holiday season.
Ulrich said he's definitely noticed an upswing in Metallica's popularity since its songs started appearing in games, particularly with one part of the target audience.
"Dad's a little cooler than he was yesterday," Ulrich said. "I now have a 7-year-old whose favorite band is Mountain, and a 9-year-old who's into Black Sabbath and Danzig" — all veterans of the "GH" series. "It's a great way for kids to be exposed to stuff that transcends generations."

Death Magnetic and Guitar Hero III
Metallica wrote:
It's a first in both music and gaming . . . the same day that "Death Magnetic" hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for "Guitar Hero III!" We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release . . . who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out.
And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next Guitar Hero, "World Tour," we're ready for that too . . . you will be able to experience "Death Magnetic" for drums, vocals, and guitar when that game emerges this Fall.

Death Magnetic Coffin Box Confirmed
For you collector types out there we just had to put together something next level when the new record comes out in the Fall . . . how about "Death Magnetic" in a coffin box? The special edition box will come out the same day the album does (we'll tell you when that is soon . . . very soon) and will of course include the full CD (duh!), along with everything next level cool relating to "Death Magnetic!" Seriously, there will be a CD with the demos of the songs, a DVD of even more "making of the album" footage not seen on Mission: Metallica, a t-shirt only available in this box, a flag, guitar picks, and a fold out poster along with a collector's credit card embossed with a code to redeem a free download of a special European show happening in September (yes, details coming soon!).
We're in the process of wrapping up the artwork now, so we'll be sure to have some things to show soon. The coffin box will only be available through www.metallica.com, www.metclub.com, and www.missionmetallica.com and we'll keep you posted here as to when that will be (soon!) . . . not all countries will be available at the same time, so keep watching.
As usual, more to come . . . (soon!)
